Newbie’s Guide to HDB Renovation in Singapore

Are you considering renovating your HDB flat? Sometimes, it could be out of a need to upgrade the looks and style, other times, it could be to repair, remove or add partition, fixtures and so on. With the current state of competitive pricing, hiring a HDB contractor might just be the best choice to handle your HDB renovation in Singapore.

Renovating your flat all by yourself can be a daunting task. You may need instructions, step-by-step guides, training, practice, tools and loads of dexterity & patience. If you want to hire a hdb contractor to handle your HDB renovation project, here are a few tips and guidelines to follow…

1. Start With a Complete Assessment

Renovations often start with a complete assessment of which parts of your Singapore HDB flat that requires renovations.  Take a good look at frequently used places like the kitchen, the sitting room, toilets and bathrooms.. These four rooms are often frequently used and need to be taken good care of. If you must, hire an expert to look critically at the house.

If you have been living in the home for a while, you may not need anyone to do this as you know what things and which rooms need fixing or renovations. If however, you are just buying or moving into the home and you don’t have a good eye for spotting things like flaws in the home, it might be a good idea to talk to a licensed hdb contractor to come take a look at your flat. Most of them will request for a copy of your hdb flat floor plan. Before working commencement, your hdb contractor will also advise you on the application of a hdb renovation permit.

2. The Kitchen

The kitchen is a very popular room in the home and is very subject to wear and tear. Take a good look at the carcasses before deciding on partial or complete renovations. If the carcasses are still in good conditions, you can just change the doors, the table or counter tops, the cupboards and the handles. If you don’t want to change the cupboard, you can spray it to revive its color.

3. The Bathrooms

Changing the baths can be the only thing the bathroom needs. So, take a good look at see if by changing the baths, your bathroom will look new. If you think it won’t, chances are that the walls look faded. So, changing the wall and floor tiles too will do just fine.

4. Fix the Windows

Windows can often taint the beauty of your home. So, you may either aim to clean it properly by hiring a window cleaning company or change the windows completely. You will be surprised how this small thing can make all the difference.

5. Repair/Replace Doors

If the doors look haggard but are still good, you may either repaint or change them. Also, give the beams –if you have any- and window panes new paintwork. If you need to fix the garage door, do so. Usually, painting a garage door can make all the difference.

Last of all, be wary of hdb renovation packages that are advertised. There is a saying in Singapore: if the renovation package seems too good to be true, it usually is.
